Tent camping recommendations in Southern Maine?

We are planning to go tent camping this summer in Southern Maine. Does anyone have any favorites? Does anyone have any advice on places to stay away from?

I would vote Sebago Lake State Park. Hands down. Terrific lake for swimming, and boating if you choose. Beach to hang out on, and shady trees around the sites. You can reserve sites, but there are also sites that you have to just show up to get. There is access to bathrooms and showers. Super affordable and in my opinion, better than a commercial campground.

Are you looking for actual camping, or campground camping?

If you’ve got kids, stick near Old Orchard, Saco, Kennebunk area where you’d be near the beach. There are also a lot of museums in southern maine. That website will be a lot of help for you as far as attractions in the area.

This is a nice campground in Old Orchard–http://www.gocamping.com/Pages/oobcamphome.htm

    Good luck, and have fun!

I agree with Sara. Sebago wins it hands down. Lots of options, very vacationer-oriented, not necessarily tourist-trappy, either. Has what you need as well as the stuff you didn’t know you needed. Tourist traps available if you like ‘em (sometimes you just can’t resist). Far enough inland that the ocean breeze doesn’t freeze ya, but close enough for quick day trip to the Atlantic, too. Waterparks to Walmart, that’s your place to go.
